Special Botanical Support for Active Patients
Let’s face it, sometimes busy schedules make it hard to fit in time for exercise and physical activity during the week. When that happens, some patients may try to pack in all of their fitness goals on the weekends. This can lead to the apt moniker, “weekend warrior.” While it’s great to try to fit in as much exercise as possible, when patients are very physically active only on the weekends, it can lead to muscle and joint issues.
These patients seem to respond well to an integrative natural plan to support and protect muscles and joints. Leading the charge in this direction are two botanicals that every active patient should consider: curcumin and boswellia.
The resin from the boswellia serrata tree contains active compounds called boswellic acids. These boswellic acids have been shown to support healthy inflammation, as well as support active muscles and joints. Also known as Indian frankincense, boswellia has been shown to help support healthy leukotriene formation in the body. It is sometimes used in combination with curcumin.
Curcumin from the spice turmeric has been the subject of many research studies showing it can support health on many levels, including muscles, joints and healthy inflammation. Curcumin is an antioxidant polyphenol that targets multiple signaling molecules on the cellular level. Many studies have confirmed that it can help support healthy inflammation and may help people who are experiencing joint and muscle pain. Studies have also shown that curcumin can help support faster exercise recovery.
Encouraging patients to exercise is a great strategy. Getting them to exercise consistently and not overdoing it on the weekends is not always possible. For those patients who require a little extra muscle and joint support, curcumin and boswellia may be worth considering. Both curcumin and boswellia are considered safe to use with few side effects or contraindications.
