Summer Hydration Tips
While maintaining good hydration status is important all year ‘round, summer is a critical time for heightening awareness and applying conscious efforts in preventing dehydration.
Elevated outside temperatures increase both sensible and insensible fluid losses, even without factoring in all the extra exercise and activity we engage in during the summer season. High sugar or alcohol intake is very dehydrating and extra care should be taken to avoid sugary sodas and soft drinks. If alcohol is consumed, drinking 16 oz. of water after every alcoholic beverage helps to keep hydration status in balance, especially when outside in the sun or wind. Water is the ideal beverage of choice but some people find it difficult to drink as much water as they really need and your patients may want something with flavor. Research has determined that about 300 mg of caffeine in beverages is the tipping point, where the diuretic effect of caffeine can possibly begin to affect your hydration status. A large iced tea is still a hydrating alternative because it usually contains less than 300 mg of caffeine. A large iced coffee may be a different story, as it is likely to contain more than 300 mg of caffeine. If you opt for iced latte or iced coffee with lots of milk, this does reduce the amount of overall caffeine in the drink, as the milk replaces half the coffee.
